DeSci at ETH Denver

Takeaways from a jam packed week of events

This past week was ETH Denver, the annual Ethereum conference. For the second year running there was a strong Decentralized Science presence, expanding on last year with the BuidlHub, DAO Denver, Schelling Point, and ResearchHub events.

A huge thank you to everyone who played a role in making this week happen and providing a space for DeSci to grow, especially the DeSci World team and Dr. Jelani Clarke for moderating many of the panels!

There were far too many talks to mention them all, but here were some of our favorites…

DAO Denver:

  • The Bio.xyz DAO ecosystem had a very strong presence! You can read some of their highlights below.

  • Benji Leibowitz gave a great talk on behalf of Vita DAO addressing some of the criticisms of longevity research

  • Andrew Verbinnen spoke about Hair DAO’s mission and they also announced their successful raise of $250k blowing past their original goal of $50k

  • Amy Zhen of Athena DAO discussed onboarding women to DAO’s and Web3 through a focus on women’s reproductive health

Buidl-Hub:

  • To De or not to De, Science was the highlight panel with some interesting thoughts from OGs in the open science (highlighted by Laurel Haak founder of Orcid) and DeSci spaces on whether DeSci requires blockchain or if its something bigger than that

  • A great session about Macro Tooling in DeSci for Onboarding Scientists. Really instructive demo’s and progress updates from teams such as Holonym, DeSci Labs, Weavechain, DBDAO, and more.

  • An awesome DeSci networking event hosted by TalentDAO and Entrepreneur First

ResearchHub Side Conference:

  • ResearchHub put the science in DeSci with some fascinating presentations on topics ranging from psychedelic research with Dr. Lindsay Cameron to a Journal Club style chat with founder Patrick Joyce about laypeople predicting the successful replication of social science studies.

  • Though heavily science focused, it was a great collection of people in DeSci and some helpful brainstorming about the link between traditional academia an Decentralized Science.

Schelling Point:

  • Schelling Point was the highlight of our trip, with a focus on alternative funding mechanisms for public goods across the board

  • There was a DeSci stage that went all day, with everything from talks on Gitcoin Grants in DeSci to panels on Decentralized AI and Compute for Public Goods

  • Forest Bai of Foresight Ventures gave a great talk on the main stage about the role of VC’s in funding DeSci

  • Some of the other highlights were talks about grants and DeSci with Keith Comito, Boris Dyakov, and Azeem Khan of Gitcoin, focusing on the power of quadratic funding in funding science

It was an amazing experience to attend ETHDenver this year and meet so many incredible people in person. From ZK to DeSci, the conference was buzzing with exciting new developments in the world of blockchain and decentralized technologies. The DeSci coverage really brought together experts and enthusiasts from around the world to discuss the latest trends and innovations in the field.

All in all, the DeSci coverage at EthDenver was a truly incredible experience. The conference brought together some of the brightest minds in the field and showcased some of the most exciting developments in the world of decentralized technologies and scientific research. It was a privilege to be a part of this event and to witness firsthand the incredible potential of DeSci to transform the way we think about science and discovery.
